Description

A People's textiles tell us a lot about their lives.  For centuries Japanese farmers, fishermen, laborers and their families bought and reused other people's cast-off ragged clothing and bedding, turning the old cloth into useful items,

Mending and repair was a way of life, not only for one's family, but later as hand-me-downs for the next generation, and the next, and the next.  Examine many 19th-20th century Japanese indigo-dyed cottons and learn about the lives of the people who used them.
