Got an extra block or two left over from another project? Don’t get rid of it. In this interactive design workshop, you will transform orphan blocks into the foundation for a thoughtful, cohesive quilt top. We will begin by introducing key elements and principles of art and design, then apply them directly as you closely examine your own blocks for shape, color, value, contrast, balance, etc. We will explore how orphan blocks can be the bridge from traditional grid-based layouts to more modern, asymmetrical compositions, experimenting with options such as medallion, clustered, and structured layouts. Through various exercises combining different blocks, group discussion, and supportive feedback, you will develop a clear design plan and practical strategies for turning leftover blocks from one or many projects into an intentional and visually compelling quilt.
