Description

Not every crochet triangle is created equally. They are most often used for shawls, and most often are right angle triangles. Even with that in mind, I can still think of at least 6 different directions in which to crochet a triangle. In addition, you can change the stitches and the angles. In this class students will learn various ways to crochet right angle triangles in single and double crochet, and how to then change the stitch patterns to create even more unique shawls or other crochet projects. The first part of class will be learning and practicing the different triangles, each will have a written pattern and chart, and the students will be asked to crochet a small sample and label them. Tie-on tags will be provided for labeling.

The triangles taught will be as follows with “top” referring to the long side, or hypotenuse, as that is the side most often used as the top for shawls, and bottom referring to the 90- degree angle opposite of the top.

  • Bottom Up
  • Top Down
  • Center Top Out
  • Both Short Sides to Center Top
  • Top Side Point to Opposite Side
  • Side to Opposite Top Side Point

Next students will learn basic stitch proportions and geometry, with the aid of stitch charts / diagrams – students do NOT need to know how to read crochet charts before class. From there the instructor will show how to replace the basic single or double crochet stitches with more detailed stitch patterns. This will translate to more than just triangles, but for the class we focus on the triangles. If time permits, students will also learn a few ways to change the angles of the triangles to create more than just a right angle (45/45/90) triangle. This information will be in the handout, even if there is not time in class to go over it.

Supply List:

  • Please bring your own crochet hook(s) that work with #3 (DK) or #4 (worsted) yarn.
  • Bring yarn snips
  • stitch markers
  • A pencil or pen for taking notes.

Skill Level: Easy – Students should know the basics of how to crochet in rows. They should be able to make basic increases and decreases in single crochet and double crochet. While this class is an easy skill level, the information taught is highly useful to any skill level crocheter.
